DUNES · 251 Congress Street, Portland, ME
Organized by Laura Jourdan Palmer
Join us at DUNES for Readings from The Wrong Tree, an evening of poetry, short stories, and art writing held in conjunction with our current exhibition, The Wrong Tree. As the show nears its close, this gathering serves as both celebration and coda, an embodied response to the ideas that have shaped the space over the past months.
Organized by Laura Jourdan Palmer, the event features readings by Katarina Weslien, Chris Stiegler, Maya Williams and Sophie Hamacher, who will give voice to a selection of texts pulled from the exhibit's vast, living library. These artists and writers will be reading activist poetry, fictional short stories, artist interviews, and more to reflect on the dynamic relationship between the the process of how literary ideas can be reflected in art that can shape the dynamic of our lived experiences.
The Wrong Tree transforms the gallery into a hybrid of loft, library, and salon. Over a thousand books are presented alongside works by fifteen artists, weaving a loose, associative network between art and literature, domestic life and public discourse. The show invites viewers to imagine not just what art is, but how it circulates: who it’s for, what it touches, and what kinds of knowledge it lives alongside.
This evening marks the winding down of the show, and serves as something of a coda. We hope you’ll join us to stretch time through The Wrong Tree on this June evening!
